Eric Carle Fun...

Today we had a moment of free time and we got to watch/sing these great Eric Carle videos!  Enjoy!

Don't forget to check out the next post on the AU Raptor Center visit!

AU Raptor Center...

Today was the BIG DAY!  AU Raptor Center visited the Green Pod!  The kids were so excited!  I was a little worried that they would not bring an owl (which is what we just learned about).  I knew they had in the past, but you just never know.  Luckily, they brought THREE owls, a falcon, a hawk, and Tiger the golden eagle!   Words cannot express the looks on their faces when they saw each owl...PRICELESS!  Here is our picture and video adventure...

The Screech Owl

They loved the fact that he wasn't a baby--he was full grown!

He made a "crying" sound!

The Barn Owl

The Barred Owl

The Falcon
They are still talking about his "tiny hat!"

Red-Tailed Hawk

This special bird had an injury.  He was missing one of his eyes.

Tiger, the Golden Eagle

Even though she is HUGE, she only weighs 10 pounds!

I love our class picture in front of the van...

Something special with Mrs. H...

Today Mrs. H came to borrow Liberty and Ally to do a special "Boots" song!  I hope you will visit the link and watch it! :)
Have a great afternoon!

Planting...

To continue our Tiny Seed activities, today we planted our very own flowers!  Since Miss Craig is doing her full time teaching, I pulled friends out into the pod to complete our activity! :)  They had a blast!  Be sure to check out Amelia's video with her explaining exactly what we did!

Our inspiration!  I found packets of "Butterfly and Hummingbird" seeds in the dollar section at Target!

Our materials!
A special thank you to Mrs. Waldrop for the potting soil!  And to Mrs. Roberts for finding the all-important clear cups (so we can see the roots)!  Thank you for helping make our activities possible!!!

We put our "pots" on our small red shelf by the back door.  We will leave the curtain open for the plants to get sunshine!

Amelia explaining what we did and why! :)

I cannot wait for you to see our last planting activity!  I found this great idea on a fellow teachers' blog and had to do it!  Coming next week!

Happy Wednesday!

Science Experiment!

Today, Miss Craig did a science experiment with the kids.  To go along with The Tiny Seed (more Tiny Seed activities coming later in the week), they took white flowers and immersed the stems in food coloring.  They made a hypothesis or prediction as to what they think will happen!

The flowers are now in our science center for us to observe each day!  I will post a results posting! :)

Butterfly Update...

I am only photographing 1-2x per week!  But over the weekend they grew so much!

Happy Tuesday!

Celebration!

This afternoon was our Spring Celebration!  This is a time where the whole school meets in the Tiger's Den to share about what each pod is learning about!  In the fall blue, yellow, and green were able to share.  Today it was purple and orange pod's turn to share!  Here we are singing a few songs and listening to the amazing things our neighbor pods are learning about!

Here we are getting settled in!

Purple pod taught us about the Man Of War and Beluga Whales!

Rosie and Olivia dancing to "One Green Jellybean!"

We love to sing and dance!

We also were able to have some special guests from all over the school, who speak two languages, come up and teach us a bit!  There was Chinese, Korean, Portugese, French, Spanish and Hindi.  It was amazing!

We also ended the day today with an extra special treat!  Yesterday we finished our first chapter book: The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary, so today we got to watch the movie...

Have a great weekend!

Caterpillars and Eric Carle...

As we continue our Eric Carle author study, here are some more activities we've been working on!

For A House for Hermit Crab the kids each chose a shell for their hermit crab and decorated it.  They then wrote "If I was a hermit crab, I would decorate my shell with..." and they had to write what they used!

A couple of examples!

For Ten Little Rubber Ducks they took tissue paper and decorated a duck.  Then filled in the blank:
"My rubber duck drifted by a ______________."

We will display the ducks in our classroom!

Also today, to go along with The Grouchy Ladybug and our upcoming DIBELS assessments, I found a ladybug nonsense word sheet!  We did one of these for President's Day and the kids love it so I thought we'd try again!  They are really grasping those nonsense words and blending!  I am so proud!

Mrs. Kimbrell made an example to show with the directions but then it disappeared so that they would have to read those words! :)

Olivia and Rosie working hard!

Finally--yesterday afternoon we had a special package delivered--our caterpillars!  I saved them for this morning and the kids were so excited!  We cannot wait to watch them grow and go through metamorphosis!

They are so tiny!  But they will not stay that way long! :)

Happy Thursday!
